"J'étais là-bas en 1963 et 1964, au 7369e Combat Support Group, faisant partie du 366e Tactical Fighter Wing. Quand j'étais stationné sur la base de Phalsbourg, j'étais assigné à certains travaux comme ceux sur les générateurs, les démarreurs de turbines, etc. Lorsque nous sommes arrivés, l'USAF s'apprêtait à quitter cette base. J'avais d'autres responsabilités: maintenances mineures sur les F84, l'emballage des parachutes, conduire le "Follow me" afin d'accueillir les avions en transit, etc."
"I was there in 1963 and 1964 in the 7369th Combat Support Group as part of the 366th Tactical Fighter Wing. When I was stationed at Phalsbourg Air Base, I was initially assigned to work on some equipment like generators, turbine engine starters, etc. When we found out the base was going to phase out the US Air Force. I took on other responsibilities such as minor maintenance on the F84 jets, packing the chutes, driving the "Follow Me" vehicles for the incoming planes, etc."

"I just found your Phalsbourg blog/site today. As you may know, the 102d TFW was stationed there for a brief period during the cold war. This wing was comprised of three squadrons, the 138 TFS (NY ANG-Syracuse); the 101 TFS (Massachusetts ANG-Boston) and the 131 TFS (Massachusetts ANG-Westfield). Le siècle de l’aviation a vu la région de Sarrebourg deux fois allemande et deux fois française. C’est dire que la Lorraine "de l’autre côté de la frontière", ne pouvait avoir une histoire aéronautique simple. Des premiers survols de Zeppelin au début du siècle à la fin de la guerre froide, ce pays des "Marches de Lorraine" fut en première ligne des conflits du XXe siècle, ce que traduit cet ouvrage surprenant pour qui méconnaîtrait l’histoire mosellane.

On ne s’étonnera donc pas de voir se succéder au gré des chapitres et des périodes historiques, Zeppelin et Albatros, Mureaux du GAO 553, planeurs d’école du NSFK, puis Piper et Stinson suivis des F-86 Sabre et autres RF-101C Voodoo, avant d’accueillir les hélicoptères de l’ALAT.

Cet ouvrage, voulu comme un "cercle de mémoire", est centré sur l’histoire des lieux au gré des périodes historiques, sans que soit oubliée la "petite aviation". Abondamment illustré de documents originaux et souvent inédits (on regrettera seulement l’aspect un peu terne de certaines photographies), il présente une rétrospective d’une région au passé aéronautique particulier.

Les bases aériennes canadiennes et américaines construites en Lorraine au début des années cinquante, et les unités qu’elles accueillirent, demeurent assez méconnues à ce jour. Constituant aujourd’hui de simples vestiges de la guerre froide, leur histoire, au niveau local, est passablement occultée par l’importance qu’ont eue les deux conflits mondiaux pour la région.
Pourtant, la présence des forces de l’OTAN dans le Nord-Est français a eu de nombreux impacts, tant au niveau politique que social et culturel. A une époque où la France panse encore ses blessures, l’arrivée massive de milliers de militaires américains, amenant avec eux leurs avions, leurs voitures, mais aussi leur musique, leur modernisme et leur mode de vie, a littéralement révolutionné les habitudes des Français.
Ce livre retrace l’histoire des nombreuses bases de l’OTAN qui y ont été construites. Il permet ainsi de mieux comprendre les décisions internationales qui se sont exprimées au niveau local, alternant de nombreuses fermetures et réouvertures de chaque plate-forme, décidant par la même occasion du destin de nombreux employés français travaillant "aux Américains".

Europe had just finished with the Second World War that left in rubble when she had to face the threat of a Joseph Stalin who didn’t want to stop in Berlin. Strong with its new power and its war experience, the Soviet Union was ready to extend its influence and its political an social model beyond the Iron Curtain.

The creation of NATO in 1949 allowed to give the reconstructing european nations the protection of the former anglo-american allies against the red threat. The NATO shield also allowed the european nations to rebuild their armed forces and their military doctrines on the basis established by the 1945 victors. But in 1949, these nations were not at all in shape to set up a trustworthy deployment against the USSR. The North Atlantic Council decided therefore to establish in Europe american and canadian units that would be the tip of NATO’s sword. In 1951, France started welcoming 9 major US Air Force bases along with several dispersal bases and adequat logistical infrastructure.

Lieutenant-Colonel Jerome McAuliffe, USAF ret., was among the first american airmen assigned to France in novembre 1951 in Bordeaux-Merignac, with the 126th Bomber Wing, Light. Later, he followed the 126th when it redeployed to Laon in 1952. Like many american airmen, he served and lived in France until the French government withdrew its participation in NATO’s integrated structure in 1967.

In US Air Force in France 1950-1967, Jerome McAuliffe gives us an extraordinary history work. Pleasant for the eyes, easy to read and carefully illustrated, the book gas two separate parts. The first part is a general view of the US Air Force deployments in France. In five chapters, the author explains the historical background, the selection and development policy for air bases and then explains the Mission Readiness years before telling about the disengagement, on General de Gaulle’s order, in 1967. In the second part, the author presents in the detail all the US Air Force bases, with many photos, maps and arrays and ends with two chapters that present a global view of the US Army and Royal Canadian Air Force bases in France. The two parts are separated by a set of colour plates with high resolution images of USAF, US Army and RCAF insignia of the units stationed in France.

US Air Force in France 1950-1967 is an absolutely magnificent work that can be put in relation with Marville RCAF Air Base, which is very close in quality. It’s a great hommage to the American airmen that served in France durind 17 years. An hommage very much needed as this part of French history and of aeronautical history in France is largely unknown and even ignored.

À peine l’Europe en eut-elle terminé avec la Seconde Guerre mondiale qui la laissait en miettes qu’elle dut faire face à la menace d’un Joseph Staline qui ne voulait pas s’arrêter à Berlin. Forte de sa nouvelle puissance et de son expérience guerrière, l’Union Soviétique était prête à étendre son influence et son modèle politique et social au-delà du Rideau de fer.

La création de l’OTAN en 1949 permit d’offrir aux nations européennes en reconstruction la protection des anciens Alliés anglo-américains contre la menace rouge. Le bouclier de l’OTAN permettait aussi aux nations européennes de reconstruire leurs forces armées et leurs doctrines militaires sur les bases établies par les vainqueurs de 1945. Mais en 1949, ces nations n’étaient pas du tout en mesure d’assurer leur sécurité et leurs infrastructures militaires étaient insuffisantes pour opposer à l’URSS un dispositif crédible. Le Conseil de l’Atlantique Nord décida donc d’installer en Europe des unités américaines et canadiennes qui serviraient de fer de lance des forces militaires de l’OTAN. La France accueillit alors, à partir de 1951, neuf bases aériennes majeures de l’US Air Force, ainsi que plusieurs terrains de dégagement et une infrastructure logistique adéquate.

Le Lieutenant-colonel Jerome McAuliffe fit partie du premier détachement américain en France en 1951, arrivant en novembre 1951 sur la base de Bordeaux-Mérignac avec le 126th Bomber Wing, Light sur bombardier B-26. Il suivit ensuite le 126th lors de son redéploiement à Laon en 1952. Comme de nombreux aviateurs américains, il vécut et servit en France, non sans plaisir, jusqu’au retrait de la France de la structure de commandement intégré de l’OTAN en 1967.

Dans US Air Force in France 1950-1967, Jerome McAuliffe nous livre un exceptionnel travail d’historien. Très agréable à consulter, facile à lire et soigneusement illustré, l’ouvrage est divisé en deux parties. La première est une vision générale des déploiements américains en France. En cinq chapitres, l’auteur explique le contexte historique, la politique de sélection de terrains et d’aménagement et explique ensuite les années de permanence opérationnelle avant le désengagement sur ordre du Général de Gaulle à partir de 1966.

Dans la deuxième partie, l’auteur entre dans le détail des installations américaines en France avec beaucoup de photographies, de plans et de chiffres, base par base, et termine par deux chapitres dédiés à une vision globale des installations de l’US Army et des déploiements de la Royal Canadian Air Force en France. Les deux parties sont séparées par un cahier couleur présentant les insignes des unités concernées, y compris ceux de l’US Army et de la RCAF.

US Air Force in France 1950-1967 est un ouvrage absolument admirable qu’il faut mettre en relation avec l’ouvrage Marville RCAF Air Base dont l’esprit est très proche, tant dans le fond que dans la forme. C’est un très bel hommage rendu aux aviateurs américains ayant servi en France pendant 17 années, hommage d’autant plus nécessaire que cette partie de l’histoire de France et de l’histoire aéronautique en France est assez peu connue, voire consciemment ignorée.

En 1966, le général de Gaulle décide de retirer la France des organes militaires intégrés de l'OTAN et il demande aux forces américaines d'évacuer les bases qu'elles occupent. Ainsi prennent fin quinze années durant lesquelles les Français ont pu côtoyer les militaires américains. Depuis le début des années cinquante en effet, Châteauroux, Verdun, Orléans, Chaumont, la Rochelle ou Toul ont vécu à l'heure américaine et, à la différence des « Sammies » de 1917-1918 ou des GIs de la Libération, les militaires américains sont venus avec leur famille, transplantant dans la vieille terre de France un peu de cet American way of life qui fait tant rêver l'Europe. Dans l'histoire des relations tumultueuses entre la France et les États-Unis, les bases américaines tiennent une place très importante non seulement parce qu'elles ont constitué un enjeu militaire et politique pour Paris et Washington mais aussi parce qu'elles ont participé à l'américanisation de la France. Fondé sur l'étude d'archives originales françaises et américaines, cet ouvrage retrace une page méconnue de l'histoire de la France au temps de la guerre froide.

"I arrived at Phalsbourg AB in June, 1965 as a 23 year old airman and remained there until March, 1967 ( by choice) and was one of the final 10 US military to leave Phalsbourg AB. During those final months, we lived at a hotel owned by a local woman who had risked her life to be friend US soldiers during WW II. Amazingly, and heroically, she gave them shelter in her hotel attic, while, at the same time, German soldiers were living there and using her hotel as their base of operations.
I remember when our Base Commander, Colonel Ballinger, learned of her incredible story, he arranged a very special dinner on the base in her honor.
But I will have to research my files to refresh my memory on all the details. .Hotel des Truites, or something close , in Lutzelbourg. was her hotel, if I recall correctly.
But you must know her story."

(Je suis arrivé à la base aérienne de Phalsbourg en Juin 1965, âgé de 23 ans et j'y suis resté jusqu'en mars 1967 (Par choix) et je fus l'un des 10 derniers militaires américains à quitter Phalsbourg. Pendant ces derniers mois, nous vivions dans un hotel tenu par une femme du coin qui risqua sa vie en entretenant des relations avec les soldats américains pendant la seconde guerre mondiale. Héroiquement, elle les abrita pendant que des soldats allemands utilisaient son hotel comme base opérationnelle.
Je me souviens quand notre commandant de base, le colonel Ballinger, apprenant son incroyable histoire, arrangea un repas en son honneur. Mais je dois fouiller dans mes dossiers afin de me rafraichir la mémoire ... Hotel des truites, ou quelquechose comme cela, à Lutzelbourg, c'était son hotel, si je me souviens bien.

Colonel Ole GRIFFITH
1956-1957

Ole Griffith, born in Pittsburg, spent his early years in and around Pennsylvania, his military years all over the world, and his last three and a half decades based in Phoenix, Arizona. Fascinated by and engaged in aviation throughout his life, Griffith has been privileged to meet many of his early heroes and larger than life aviation personalities and other notables. At Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s DLC Auditorium on Thursday, October 18, at 7 PM, Griffith shares a well mixed, multi-media program on the 1942 Doolittle Raid on Japan and video of the 65th Raiders’ Reunion. Everyone is welcome at this free, public event.

As a child he and his sister engaged in aviation imagination play. They followed the news of Lindberg, Earhart, Doolittle, and other aviator’s flights and feats. A member of youth aviation organizations, Ole was a prize-winning model airplane designer and builder and an amateur aviation photographer. He was destined to make his interest in photography a valuable part of his early military career.

With a BS degree in Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering from Carnegie Institute of Technology, Griffith was commissioned from ROTC as 2nd Lt. US Army Corps of Engineers in 1942, but his sights were on aviation. Shunning as alternate course and immediate promotion, he leapt at the opportunity to be detailed to the Army Air Corps for pilot training, which was partly secured under contract through Embry-Riddle in Florida. After completing his pilot training in December 1943, he was assigned to the 1st Photo Group flying photo and mapping missions throughout Central and South America in 1944 and 1945. This assignment placed him in Panama, Chili, Peru, and Brazil, which allowed him to experience these cultures and practice his Spanish in addition to his flying experience.

Griffith had longed to fly the P-38, but spent his career flying nearly fifty other aircraft, principally 0-47s, B-24s, B-17s, C-47s, C-45s, F-2s, T-33s, and his favorite, the B-25 named “My Happiness,” which ended up in the Doolittle Raiders’ exhibit at the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, Ohio. Griffith’s career took on more land-based responsibility, but he stayed current in flying until late in his military career.

The Air Force provided Ole Griffith opportunity for advanced degrees, which he pursued with relish. He secured advanced engineering degrees from the Air Force Institute of Technology (1946-47) and Stanford University (1947-48) and graduated from Air Command & Staff College in 1950.

The love of aviation, which was practically born in Griffith, has continued to grow throughout his life. This pursuit has taken him many places, allowed him to serve his country and his fellow man, and provided many joyous encounters. Some military, political, and aviation notables Ole Griffith met, served with, or with whom he developed friendships include: Jimmy Mattern, explorer and aviator; Al Williams, Naval Marine aviator; Ben Howard, airplane designer, builder, and racer; Vice President Hubert Humphrey; Generals Omar Bradley, Curtiss Lemay, and Jimmy Doolittle and many of the eighty Doolittle Raiders; test pilot Chuck Yeager; several astronauts including Gus Grissom and Frank Borman; several of the Tuskegee Airmen; many World War II flying aces including Francis Gabreski, Joe Foss, Jack Purdy, Joe Forster, and Tex Hill. In 1947, while a student at the Air Force Institute of Technology, Ole Griffith’s roommate there was Captain (later Colonel) John Paul Stapp, M.D., who was exploring and testing the human body limits for positive and negative “Gs.” While there, Griffith had a chance meeting with Orvil Wright followed 50-years later by a planned, private tour and videoing of the Wright Mansion interior.

In the mid 1950s, then Lt. Colonel Griffith was Base Commander at Phalsbourg Air Base in France. While stationed there, he and his wife Vickie were the guests of honor for the City of St. Die Vosges’ 1958 Godmother of America Celebration. At this and other assignments, his native intelligence, family and educational backgrounds, ability to grasp the big picture while inspiring and managing for success on the details, and his winning personality supported Ole Griffith on a path of service and satisfaction in aviation.

Griffith feels blessed to have lived and worked in the many and varied locations and positions of his career. Looking back, he selected several places to highlight. “I would have to name Wright Patterson Air Force Base as the most significant and treasured because it has been a place of focus all of my life,” Griffith said, when asked about special places. “It is where I met my beloved wife Vickie, where I received excellent education at the Air Force Institute of Technology, where I have met so many wonderful people involved in the field of aeronautics, and where ‘my’ B-25 is exhibited to honor the Doolittle Raiders,” he added. His postings, all over the world, always included his family. He went on to tell about his ten years of service in Washington DC at the Pentagon and Andrews Air Force Base. Griffith delighted in this decade of living in a Virginia suburb because it afforded him and his family an opportunity to explore much of the early history of this nation. Upon retirement from military service in 1970, he and the family moved to Phoenix, Arizona, to accept a civilian job with AiResearch Mfg. Co. where he retired two decades later. Arizona, because of its great weather, home to his family, the many memorable experiences flying with friends, and deep friendships, is also truly treasured by Griffith.

While living in Phoenix, the Griffith family has extended to the fourth generation to include a great granddaughter and a great grandson along with three grandsons and four granddaughters along with the original three children—Jeff, Jennifer, and Julie. Intelligence, beauty, generosity, and graciousness abound in this family, which counts among its number Miss Arizona 2006 Hilary Griffith, who hosts the mid-morning show on Prescott based KGCB Radio Shine.

Yavapai County with its many attractions is special to Ole because of the air shows at Love Field, the opportunity to get away to the cool hill country when the temperatures shoot above 110 degrees in Phoenix, and the family’s annual retreat in Sedona. Ole was a guest at the VIP tent at Prescott’s Skyfest 2006 where he met new friends and renewed old acquaintances. The Arroyo Roble Resort family getaway in Sedona began with one timeshare and expanded to three as the family grew. This family dons an almost von Trapp appearance each summer as they occupy their three timeshare villas there. Dressed in matching winter attire, each year the entire group poses for the famous Griffith family Christmas photo during their July or August visit.

A published writer and photographer, Griffith is a national and local member of American Aviation Historical Society (AAHS) for which he served two 2-year terms as president of the Phoenix Wing and currently serves on that board. He also worked to facilitate the AAHS National Conference in Scottsdale, Arizona, in 1996. He is a member of the Air Force Association, Experimental Aircraft Association, American Photo Mapping Association, Phalsbourg Air Base Reunion, Doolittle Raiders’ Reunion, Daedalians, and the Commemorative Air Force.

Griffith’s love of family, photography, travel, and aviation are well supported by his able embrace of modern technology such as computers, the Internet, E-mail with attachments, CDs, DVDs, and digital and video photography. This has allowed him to stay in touch with friends and fellow aviation enthusiast, collectors, and museum curators who have benefited from his connections for receiving aviation memorabilia. For Ole Griffith, the fascination continues. He is engaged in aviation of the past and the present, while ever looking into the future of flight.

"A quote from the September 18, 1955 issue of Overseas Weekly: "The huge runway at this stillborn NATO Air Defense Base is sinking in the mud and USAFE has closed the runway." Therefore, I arrived at an air base that had no planes.

Phalsbourg AFB was located in a beautiful area of France, Alsace. It was about a 45-minute drive to Strasbourg on the Rhine River.

When arriving by train from Paris there was no one to meet me in the small village of Phalsbourg as was promised. Luckily an MP truck happened by and I got a ride to the base. I was let out at a BOQ (1) and found a room. This room contained a narrow cot, a straight-backed chair, and a dresser, no lamp, no desk. During the year I tried to make it homelike by putting desert scenes drawn on paper over the windows, painting the ceiling squares yellow and blue, and finally getting some cast off curtains. Three civilian women employees and several officers lived in this BOQ.

For several months I didn't know whether or not I would stay on this base. There were 34 students and 4 teachers plus the principal who also taught. The powers that be said we were over-staffed. The following is the chronology of my staying and leaving episodes:
1. Sept 11 - I heard I was going to a new school in Italy.
2. Sept. 13 - I will stay in Phalsbourg. In the middle of the morning my teaching assignment was changed from second and third grades to grades 3,4 and 6. There were no 5th graders in our school. No warning about this change, no text, no chance to prepare.
3. Oct 14 - A new principal arrived and she took my two sixth graders.
4. Oct. 24 - Rumors had it that I would leave Phalsbourg.
5. Oct 31 - I may stay.
6. Nov. 1 - Probably stay.
7. Nov. 3 - Staying even though I had orders to go to Chambley. The school officer said I was not leaving.
8. Nov. 25 - The chiefs of schools in France and Germany visited our bases and said we were entitled to only two teachers. Our school officer convinced them to hold off shipping one of us out until after Christmas.
9. After Christmas - I stayed.

The morale of the base at this time was at a low ebb. Funds and personnel had been cut. There were not enough employees to keep things going efficiently. The Officer's Club was closed so we ate in the regular mess. There were no paved roads on base and so after a year of fighting the awesome sand in Libya, I now faced the sticky, gooey, and slippery mud of Phalsbourg. The day I finally got boots to help me through this phenomenon was a cause for celebration.

A BIG problem I had this year was the fact I did not get my hold baggage until Nov. 8th. Another problem was that Paris kept losing or misplacing our payroll records. Only once or twice during the year did we get our checks on time. The fact that they closed the American Express office on our base compounded the problem, as we had to go looking for a place to cash our checks. We usually had to go to Ramstein hoping we could get there before the office closed. The BX closed, but we did have a little snack bar. A bright spot was when they put a refrigerator in my room and the principal got a commissary card. When we purchased a hot plate and an electric pot for heating water we were really ecstatic. We produced some fabulous meals with this meager equipment.

Our Post Office was open from 9:30 AM until 12:30 PM. To use the Post office we had to go during school hours. We were with the children from 7:45 AM - 2:30 PM. We only ate with them in the snack bar. We served their lunch and cleaned the tables.

Somehow, we managed to put on a Christmas play - The Littlest Angel. My job one Saturday morning in December was to move costumes and scenery from the school to the Service Club. I couldn't use my car because you couldn't park near the school and you couldn't park near the Service Club. We practiced the play on the stage of the Service Club Friday and were going to do so again on Saturday afternoon, but this is Phalsbourg and they were in the midst of tearing up the stage floor and would continue to do so on Sunday. I was going to put up the scenery, but of course that was impossible. We didn't have Murphy's Law here, we had Phalsbourg's Law.

Another job I had was that of the secretary at the school. The powers that be requested forms to be filled out, but neglected to send the forms. So, I typed up the forms and then put in the information

Our school library had about 500 books. Some of the children's mothers typed library cards for them. We had to classify and arrange the books on the shelves. This took care of our compensatory time for the rest of the year. We followed the Dewey Decimal System the best we could.

We got a day off from school in May. Strange reason - the troops had been working hard to make Phalsbourg, the base, beautiful. In appreciation everyone had the day off.

We had many unusual happenings this year in Phalsbourg, but this event topped them all. We four lady employees were enjoying a game of bridge when the base chaplain came in and told us there was a woman in labor in the dispensary. The couple was on their way to a new base in France, coming from Munich, when the woman started having labor pains. There were no nurses on base so one of the dependent wives acted as nurse. My principal volunteered to take care of their other child who was only 9 1/2 months old so the father could pace the floor. History was made in Phalsbourg - the first birth ever on base and then it turned out to be a multiple birth - twin boys. No scales in the dispensary so don't know the weight of the babies. A helicopter flew the twins to a hospital in Landsthul, Germany. I was chief bottle washer and diaper scrounger for their other child. I went to the trailer park where the dependent families lived and did manage to obtain six diapers. The baby stayed in my room that night and her father picked her up the next morning. That summer, I worked six weeks in the base library.

Even though we had problems at Phalsbourg it was a great year, especially meeting some wonderful people. Because there were so few people there it was like one big family. I still correspond and have met with some of these people during the years since 1956. The location of Phalsbourg was just perfect for my VW bug and me. We were in the beautiful Voges Mountains, and just driving through the small, picturesque villages was a treat. I had the chance to take many trips during the year. One of the most beautiful drives was from the base to Saverne, a distance of about ten miles. In the fall the leaves on the trees were spectacular, so colorful. Coming from desert country this really made an impact on me.

This year could not have been that bad because in September I would be on my way to Rhein-Main for another go."

"Rien à voir avec "El Toro et les Cyclones"... Après des débuts modestes en 1961 (...), notre groupe frappe un grand coup en 1965, avec un matériel au top ! Les grattes strat/mustang/précision, amplis Bandmaster et Bassman et un orgue Farfisa. (...) Pour la petite histoire, c'est mon père menuisier qui gagnait 1000 F par mois, qui a contracté un crédit pour acheter ma guitare 2200 F, et les deux amplis à raison de 2500 F chacun ....! Dur dur !!!!!!!!! La chanteuse Shannon SMITH était Américo/Canadienne, fille d'une Canadienne et d'un Texan qui gérait les clubs de boys sur la base Américaine de Phalsbourg Air Base ( base de l'OTAN ), et à ce titre, il nous faisait jouer dans les quatres clubs de la base aussi souvent que possible. Sur la photo du disque, il y a la date 2003 ... car j'ai fais un CD avec le 45 trs. Je joue depuis le début de l'année avec un goupe de Metz "LEGEND", çà "shadows" sec en Lorraine, qu'on se le dise ...!"

"Effectivement j'ai connu cette période 'DORÉES' qu'étaient les années 60 avec la musique 'électrique' qui démarrait et je passe tout le reste ............. j'ai uniquement des 'reliques' photos, disque 45t., et des souvenirs pleins la mémoire mais aucun document sur la base proprement dite. Je vais tout de même vérifier mes 'archives 'mais il n'y a que la musique et les amis de cette belle époque qui m'intéressaient leur famille, d'ailleurs j'avais comme 'copine' la chanteuse des CYCLONES SHANNON SMITH dont le papa était SERGENT ils ont été démarqués en Angleterre vers 1964 et de la ????????? dieu seul le sait où ils sont allés et plus jamais eu de nouvelles. ............... "

"... piste fermée en raison d'un F-86H de l'USAF détourné de Phalsbourg et ayant fait exploser un pneu à l'atterrissage. L'avion a rendu hors d'usage la piste en détruisant 10 feux et dégradant celle-ci avec de la boue. Il y eu un important retard parceque le personnel au sol n'a pas pu obtenir une barre de remorquage afin de retirer l'aéronef et la balayeuse de piste n'a pas pu démarrer."

("... runway closed due to a USAF F-86H who diverted from Phalsbourg and blew a tire on landing. The aircraft swerved off the runway destroying 10 runway lights and putting a lot of mud on the runway. A further delay was caused when the ground personnel could not get a tow bar to remove the aircraft and the runway sweeper would not start.")

Tôt après nos débuts, nous avons reçu un plan de vol d'une formation de F-104 en vol au départ des USA et en direction de Phalsbourg, France. La formation avait ravitaillé en vol et devait prendre part aux portes ouvertes durant le week-end. La formation fut transférée à Moselle Control près de Paris. Notre radar guida les F-104 en final sur Phalsbourg. Un des pilotes rendit compte d'une vibration incontrollée, tira sur le manche et s'éjecta, l'aéronef se désintégra! Je rencontrais le pilote aux portes ouvertes, portant une canne, boitant et couvert de bandelages sur le visage. Le control de Moselle venait d'expérimenter son premier cas d'urgence!"
("Quiet early in our operation we received a flight plan from a formation of F-104's en route from USA to Phalsbourg, France. The formation had refuelled in flight and was to take part in an open house event during the weekend. The formation was transferred to Moselle Control near Paris. Our radar placed the F-104's on final approach to Phalsbourg. One of the pilot's reported uncontrollable shuddering, pulled straight up and bailed out, the aircraft disintegrating about him! I met him at the open house that weekend, carrying a cane, limping and .wearing a couple of band aids on his face. Moselle had experienced its first emergency.")

I joined the US Air Force on 1 Feb, 1956 and retired from the Air Force on 31 December, 1983. With credit for the two years I served in the South Carolina National Guard, I was credited with 28 years active duty.

After basic training at Lackland AFB in Texas, I went F.E. Warren AFB in Cheyenne, Wyoming where I attend the Telephone Installer/Repairman School for 11 weeks.

From there I was assigned to Andrews AFB just outside of Washington DC. I was there for a year and was transferred to Spangdhalem Air Base in Germany. I was only there for 3 months and then I transferred to Phalsbourg AB in June, 1957.

I worked as a Telephone Installer at Phalsbourg for three years. At on time, I was the person in charge the Telephone Outside Plant. The Telephone career Field was composed of several shops at that time. There was the Outside Plant that installed and repaired telephones on the entire base. There was the Telephone Inside Plant which maintained all the switching equipment in the Central Office. There was the cable section that maintained all the communications cable on the base and then there was the Antenna Section that maintained all the Radio antennas on the base.

I left Phalsbourg Air Base on 9 June, 1960 and was reassigned to Andrews Air Force Base for a second time.

I stayed at Andrews from June, 1960 until July 1964. I was then transferred to Saigon, South Vietnam and then was transferred to Ubon Air Base in Thailand.

I left Thailand in January, 1965 and was assigned to Sewart AFB in Tennessee. I was at Sewart AFB until September 1966. I was the assigned to Danang AFB at Danang, Vietnam. I left Danang and was assigned to Patrick AFB in September, 1967. While assigned to Patrick, I worked at Cape Kenned Air Force Station which was about 25 miles North of Patrick AFB. At the Cape, I installed missile inter comm systems on the launch pads, Gantrys, Support towers and block houses and control centers. After doing this for about 3 or four years, I assumed duties as the NCOIC (Non-commissioned officer in charge) of the Inside Plant section and was responsible for maintaining all Missile intercom systems on the Cape. I had 45 men under my control at that time.

I left Patrick and Cape Kennedy in January, 1973 and went back to Germany. I was at Sembach, Germany from January '73 until June, '73. I was transferred to Lindsey Air Station in Wiesbaden, Germany. I spent 4 years at Lindsey and traveled all over Europe in support of the Secretary of Defense and other big shots who came to Europe for what ever reason.

I was in a Combat Communications Squadron at Lindsey and I was NCOIC of the Air Force Component Headquarters. My section was capable of setting up an emergency Air Force Base any where in Europe. This was truly a satisfying assignment. I traveled a lot to England, Belgium, Holland, Spain ,The Netherlands, and all over Germany.

I left Germany in June, 1977 and was assigned to Kirtland AFB, New Mexico. At Kirtland, I worked as a Quality Control Specialist inspecting all types of communications equipment, Training Programs, and maintained Plant-in-place records for all installed communications cables on the base.

After about two years in this job, I became the NCOIC of the section and ran the section I left Kirtland AFB in June, 1982 and was assigned to Edwards Air Force Base in California. This was the Air Force Flight Test Center.

I was assigned to the 1925th Communications Squadron there. My job was Maintenance Superintendent for the Squadron. Once again I was in charge of the Telephone Inside Plant, Telephone Outside Plant, Telephone Cable Shop, Radio shop and a couple of other shops. This was my last assignment in the Air Force. I retired there at Edwards AFB on 31 December, 1983.

I moved back to Albuquerque, New Mexico at that time and was hired on as a Telephone Installed at Kirtland AFB. I worked there for another 17 years in Civil Service working for the Air Force as a civilian. I had several Titles while assigned to the Outside Plant. At one point, I was in charge of the Outside Plant operations.

The Squadron I worked for went contract in the year 2000 and I the worked for the Contractor for a year and then decided to retire. I had 47 years combined service at that point and was called back by the contractor on a couple of occasions to do several different jobs.

Before I sign off, I'd just like to say that I did a lot of work there in the control tower. I installed and Maintained the telephones, HeliFax machines, Teletype machines and radio circuits there. Base operations was on the ground floor and I did a lot of work there to.

I use to visit the Snack Bar there which I believe was on the second floor at that time. The main Snack Bar was back up the street a couple of building away.
